Why Vimeo Is Awesome
I’ve been meaning to write a “Why _____ Is Awesome” Post for a while, so here’s one.
I love Vimeo. Vimeo, if you are unfamiliar, is a video sharing site. It’s basically Flickr for Videos. Now, notice I didn’t say “it’s kinda like YouTube”. There was a reason for that.
Vimeo is better than YouTube in so many ways. There is a lot less shit on Vimeo than there is on Vimeo. I’d say about 95% of the content on vimeo is great, entertaining stuff. The reason for this is that users of Vimeo are encouraged to post personal video and also videos that they spent a lot of time on. If you are posting a video to Vimeo, it’s not usually because you want to get noticed and you want the most views. Vimeo’s userbase is much smaller than Youtube’s. I think it’s a little under 200,000 (last time I asked). I think because of this as Vimeo grows it’s content will stay great because it started great. YouTube’s content has always been the way it is, and it will continue that way. I’m confident that Vimeo’s founders will make sure it stays a place where great content can live happily.
Another reason I love Vimeo is all the unique features it has. Of course all of the necessary features are there like tagging and comments and and contacts. However, there are a lot of things you don’t see everywhere there. For example, the ability to make a video only be visible to select people, you can pick who you want to see the video. Also, you can share a video with another user right on the site. Finally one of my favorite features is the ability to change the video’s thumbnail, unlike on YouTube where the frame right in the middle of the video becomes the thumbnail, on Vimeo you can pick from 9 different frames within the video or even upload your own image.
Vimeo is a fantastic site and if you have a moment you should go check it out an make an account (it takes like 3 seconds).
