Best iPhone Apps (from the Apps Store)
OK, new and original iPhone owners, I’m going to save you a lot of time. I’ve been checking the App Store almost obsessively since it “opened” and I’ve played with a shit-ton of apps (seriously, you should see my itunes receipts, but most of the apps were free). Anyway, here are the gems I’ve found in the store (in no particular order):
- Pandora - Free - Just like the web site, I really really love this app and want to hug the developers.
- Tuner Internet Radio - $5.99 - This is an app made by Nullriver (also made Installer.app for the hacked iPhone), and it’s a nice tuner app that lets you listen to .m3u, .aac, .pls, and .mp3 streams on you iPhone. It also has a large database of streams for you to search through and listen to.
- Last.fm - Free - It doesn’t scrobble, but you can listen to your last.fm stations, so it’s a good start.
- Midomi - Free - helps you identify tracks by humming them or sampling them and then tells you about them and links to the in iTunes.
- AOL Radio - Free - Lets you listen to internet radio streams.
- Shazam - Free for now - Similar to Midomi, but you have to sample.
- Pianist - $5.99 - A piano… in your iPhone!
- BeatMaker - $19.99 - This is beyond me, but I watched a video of it somewhere and it looks amazing, and apparently is as good as some professional beat making apps.
- WHERE - Free - helps you find things around you… like starbucks and gas stations (also tells you the current price of gas), and a bunch of other stuff.
- CityTransit - $2.99 - best public transit app for the iPhone, they just need to make it for more cities.
Netshare - $9.99 - Lets you tether your iphone to your computer so you can use 3G or Edge to connect to the internet… yes, you read that correctly. OH SHIT, it’s gone.. not surprised.
- OmniFocus - $19.99 - a GTD app that is location aware.
- NYTimes - Free - Nice little news app.
- Sketches - $5.99 - Solid drawing app, much improved over the jailbreak version.
- Twinkle - Free - best iPhone Twitter Client
- Stanza - Free - eBook reader
- Instapaper - Free - This needs work, but it’s a good start, and if you use the site regularly it is a must.
- AIM - Free - AIM… on you iPhone!
- AP Mobile News Network - Free - Another nice news app.
- Graffitio - Free - nice proof of concept, lets you create message boards at certain locations that anyone can add to.
- NetNewsWire - Free - Will be the best RSS reader for the iPhone… needs some work.
- 2Across - $5.99 - Crossword puzzle app.
- Wordpress - Free - seems to me it would be a pain in the ass to blog from the iPhone, but here you go.
- UrbanSpoon - Free - Helps you find a random place near you to eat.
- Enigmo - $9.99 - fun 3D puzzle game, better than the desktop version
- 1Password - Free for now - needs work, but it’s going to be awesome if you use the desktop version.
- Facebook - Free - I hate facebook, but they did a nice job with this app.
- Friend Book - Free - This has been removed from the App Store, but I’m sure it’ll be back, it’s for organizing you contacts and you send someone your v-card with it.
- Tap Tap Revenge - Free - DDR for your fingers.
- Bloomberg - Free - Stocks app that shows you a little more than the built in widget does
- Mocha VNC Lite - Free - VNC app
- WeDict - Free - Dictionary, if you need that sort of thing
- Showtimes - Free - Good movie showtimes app
- iJezzball - $3.99 - JEZZBALL BITCHES!
- Yelp - Free - a location aware Yelp, needs work.
- YPmobile - Free - another good app for finding stuff near you.
- Trism - $4.99 - addictive puzzle game
- Google Mobile App - Free - I thought this was kinda lame, but it was made by the guy who made Quicksilver, and it’s a location aware Google search among other things.
- Super Monkey Ball - $9.99 - You saw the demo.
- Remote - Free - How did I use my AppleTV without this?
