Ben’s mac tips #1
I’ve been using macs for years and have learned a lot of little productivity tips over the years so I’d like to share as many as I can remember with anyone who bothers to read my tumblr.
- Learn Spelling - When using a word processor (I use Pages, and it’s pretty great), you can right click to find definitions and corrected spellings of misspelled words. OK, you might know that. However, what most people don’t do is use the learn spelling option. For example, I was writing a paper where I used the word Fibrillin 1, is a protein that helps strengthen connective tissue if you are curious, and now Pages stops underlining that word every time I use it. More importantly, it let me know when I spelled it wrong in a later paragraph. very useful
- The Mystical Black Dot - you may have noticed that in apps like Word or Pages that there is a dot in the red button that closes a window in OS X. That dot means that your document isn’t saved. Now you know!
- Summarize - This one you probably won’t believe, but you can see for yourself, it’s real. In the services menu (you know that menu you never use that is located under the menu that is titled whatever the application you are in is titled) there is an option called “Summarized”. Basically, if you select a large amount of text and use this option you will get a window where you can shorten, or summarize, that body of text. I am not shitting you.
I’ll post more as I remember them
