My mouse stopped working this week, and to replace it I got this thing. It’s the Wacom Bamboo Touch. It’s basically a giant trackpad with multi-touch gestures. It sells for $69, which seems to be the median price for a good mouse these days (seriously, if you want something that doesn’t feel like a cheap piece of plastic crap you’re going to have to spend at least $40).
It takes some getting use to, but for general navigation, I like it a lot more than a standard mouse. It has all of the gestures that the MacBook Pro trackpads have (including pinch to zoom). I have a feeling that if I try to do anything precise it will be a total pain in the ass, but for most things it is fine.
Wacom also makes a Bamboo that is just a pen tablet for the same price and another model which has both in one for $99. The pen-input models are probably going to leave a lot to be desired because they’re physically small and have low resolution and pressure sensitivity. If you’re going to do anything serious with your tablet, you probably should invest in a Intuos4 or a Cintiq display.
Anyway, check out Wacom’s site because they’ve recently updated most of their models and they have a pretty interesting product lineup. You can get the Bamboo models or the Intuos4 at Apple or BestBuy (or online).
