Why I’m Funny by Joel Johnson →
I recently mentioned that Joel Johnson is one of my favorite tech writers. His work has always stuck out to me, which is amazing when you consider that I’ve mostly come across his work on blogs like Gizmodo.
Anyway, he posted this piece to his personal website. It’s his personal story of sexual abuse, and I’m linking to it because it’s an extremely powerful and well...
Why didn't anyone tell my how awesome TextMate was...
Seriously.
Theme suggestions?
I’ve queued up a bunch of posts for App Per Day, and before I torture myself and potential visitors by trying to bring back my Phrase Per Day theme, I want to know if anyone out there in Tumblrland knows of a nice Tumblr theme that would be good for showcasing an app… everyday.
I’d go about making another theme of my own, but I find it too frustrating to work with Tumblr’s...

App Per Day →
So, I’ve just started a little site here on Tumblr. On it I plan to feature an interesting Mac app everyday. Lets see how long this lasts…
Feel free to Submit suggestions.

Podcasting (for cheap) Part One: Hosting
You need a place to put your podcasts. You also need a website where people can find out about your podcast, but I don’t suggest you use the same kind of hosting for these two things.
For the site, you can go with a cheap host like A Small Orange or JLK Hosting (I’ve used both and have found that they’re both good options for hosting a small site). That said, you might want to...
Plantronics .Audio 655 USB Multimedia Headset →
I ended up getting this headset. They’re apparently on clearance everywhere because they were about $30 at Best Buy as well. They’re actually pretty good headphones and the mic, although very sensitive, is also very good.
Bing Maps →
I hate to say it, but I’ve found something else Microsoft has done well. Bing Maps is pretty impressive. A lot of it has to do with the Seadragon zooming technology. It loads a lot smoother than Google Maps.
Good Cheap USB Headset?
Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent USB headset (mostly concerned with mic quality), for less than $50?
ClickToFlash for Safari →
I had heard about this plugin before, but only recently did I decided to try it for myself. Blocking flash never seemed all that important to me, just as I’ve never used AdBlock, but that’s mostly because I understand that PEOPLE NEED TO MAKE MONEY FOR THE INTERNET TO WORK… sorry about that…
So, the reason I tried ClickToFlash is because it does something pretty awesome to...
Blue Mikey →
This thing is brilliant. It’s a high quality mic that connects to an iPhone or iPod.

I was right!
Bean for Mac →
kapi recommends that I try Bean. I’ve used it in the past (and beta tested a version of it), and although it’s a very good app, it’s more limited than Pages, and parts of it are strangely designed (Full Screen mode).
Word Processors
I’ve been trying to find the perfect writing app for mac for a long time. For years I used Office for Mac, but I switched over to Apple’s Pages because Office was atrocious on the Mac. Pages has worked well for a while, but I’ve come to realized that it’s a very limited app. It does all the basics well, but it doesn’t help you do more advanced things like citations or...

Apple Preparing To Release A New MacBook? →
(via soupsoup)
Sounds good! I’ll probably be updating my MacBook soon (Late 2008 13”).
It has done me well, but it’s not powerful enough, especially considering I might be doing some more CAD work soon.
This American Life for iPhone, iPod touch, and... →
It’s a $3 app that helps support their bandwidth bills. You can even stream WBEZ Chicago so you can listen live when it airs.
Boxer: The DOS game emulator that’s fit for your... →
I don’t remember if I posted this here or not, but it deserves mentioning again even if I have. Boxer is a GUI for DOSBox that makes playing old DOS games on your Mac stupidly easy to do. At this point, the developer has gone beyond DOSBox by adding performance and organization features.
Download this only if you have no other plans for this evening. Also, check the blog for alpha versions.
Why I think the iPad will be awesome.
OK, so does anyone besides me remember back in 2007 when Apple launched the iPhone how Apple told developers that there was not going to be an SDK and that they should just develop web apps instead? Then, developers complained and the following year we had an SDK. Fast forward to today, and the App Store has over 140,000 applications and there have been over 3 Billion (!!!) total download. All...
Adspecs
An excellent video by Joel Johnson, one of my favorite bloggers (yes, I have favorite bloggers), about Adspecs, which are inexpensive fluid filled glasses that allow you to adjust the level of correction without needing to have custom lenses made.
It’s a brilliant idea, and though the current version is horribly ugly and probably uncomfortable, it’s nice to see an innovative...
